We left Thomas on Saturday at about 0900 to run to Gulnare Inlet. It was a pleasant run (but we were a bit underpowered with two reefs in the main) with gusts up to 25 knots but easy to pootle along – she did want to round up on a beam sea sometimes, but after a stern talking to Phlat Chat behaved herself. We went through Dent Passage (after Andrew nearly missing it- duh!) between Hamilton and Dent Island and watched a plane take off. The guide book says enter Gulnare on a rising tide but we picked our way in on the last two hours of the falling tide – tricky but with a shallow draft we made it – just. We are now anchored in Gulnare Inlet and it is a great spot. We went exploring in the dinghy on the rising tide in the afternoon. The Inlet goes up a long way but we kept running out of water and had to throw out the anchor to wait for the tide to catch us up. We had a “marina sleep” last night. That’s when you can sleep without one ear and one eye open in case your anchor drags. Slept well and woke to flat water and only a tiny chop…..how good. We’ll stay here today and work out what happens on Monday later. Two things – on the VHF there’s a woman on a commercial boat who has gone on a trip with her husband and daughter to Whitehaven a short run from Airlie or Hamilton and she has had a panic attack and has refused to come back - they are trying to work out what to do – poor woman. She insists on a chopper to get her out, she must be seriously scared and it’s really not that bad – a reasonable sea running but that’s all. Also in Gulnare there are five other boats with us but only one has anyone on it – the rest are just sitting here – I wonder where their owners are ?

  1. Pretty scary when there are no other people but the boats are there...are you sure you didn't make an error in navigation and somehow you ended up in the Bermuda Triangle...
