Monday/Tuesday 29/30 June
Well the Monday job was not much fun but I hope we have improved the situation – we do now have a few spare parts just in case (A Phippen, plumber, at your service !). We had drink with Chris and Judy Monday night (having shared a BBQ at the marina on Sunday) and we decided we would head to Lady Musgrave Island on Tuesday after all.
We set off from Port Bundaberg at 0540 (after the alarm went off at 0500. Early starts in this game). We got away without incident and motored out into the sea to turn left and hoist sails for a 54NM trip, guess what – no wind – zero! But we had a nice “drive” for 9 hours and saw dolphins and interestingly two sea snakes on the surface each about 1.5 m long – we think we were making “whoppie” but I tell you this they did not even look up as we motored past.
We arrived off Lady Musgrave about 1430h and were nervous about entering the reef. It is very narrow and razor sharp coral on each side, so we proceeded with caution. Just to make it easy for us to concentrate a whale started to perform acrobatics about 500 metres away – what an aid to concentration – but what a show. Chris was in the bows with her polaroids looking for bommies (coral outcrops) and we steered in, meanwhile a couple of manta rays were busy behind us and two turtles swam with us into the lagoon. Another aid to concentration. But we made it and anchored with no worries. The down side is we are truly isolated. No mobile, no internet and even the radio (VFH) won’t transmit to shore (we are too far out to sea for it) we can receive intermittently and hopefully that will allow us to get weather reports. That’s an upgrade for next time !!
